The Special Mining Marshals have recorded a significant operational success in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, adopting a non-kinetic and community-based strategy to curb persistent illegal mining activities in the area.
According to the Commander of the unit, ACC Attah John Onoja, the operation reflects the Marshals’ commitment to resolving mining-related conflicts through engagement rather than force.
He explained that their operational approach prioritizes assessing the peculiar circumstances of each case and applying solutions that safeguard the collective interests of both the host communities and the government.
The Mariga engagement, he noted, demonstrates that constructive dialogue, trust building, and localized problem-solving can yield sustainable results where coercive methods may be less effective.
By working closely with community leaders and stakeholders, the Marshals secured cooperation that helped to address entrenched illegal mining practices without confrontation.
Security analysts say the development highlights the role of adaptive and intelligence-driven strategies in protecting Nigeria’s extractive sector.
The Mining Marshals’ success also reinforces the value of community involvement in security operations, particularly in areas where mistrust or long-standing grievances often complicate enforcement.
The Corps has advised residents of Mariga to take full advantage of the peaceful resolution, stressing that protecting the environment and ensuring compliance with mining regulations will contribute to long-term development in the area.
