Drunk man, on swimming adventure with girlfriend drowns in Anambra

A 42-year old man, Izuchukwu Achusim has drowned in a swimming pool allegedly while on an enjoyment spree with an unidentified woman, known to be his girlfriend.

The incident happened at about 8:30 pm Saturday night, at Loftus Garden Hotel, Onitsha.

The victim resident at No 35 Guesthouse street, Fegge-Onitsha, who was said to have consumed a lot of alcohol and as such, became tipsy, had allegedly jumped into the deepest part of the swimming pool and got drowned.

It was gathered that the hotel manager with the help of other guests at the hotel, had on the discovery that the victim was drowning, commenced a rescue operation and pulled him out.

He was later rushed to Waterside Hospital, Onitsha for medical attention where he was later certified dead by a medical doctor on duty.

A statement confirming the incident on Sunday by Anambra Police Spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed said the scene of the incident was visited by Police detectives and corpse photographed and deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

“On the 15th of August, 2020 at about 8:30 pm, there was a report at Central Police Station Onitsha that one Izuchukwu Achusim ‘m’ aged 42 years of No 35 Guesthouse street, Fegge-Onitsha went to Lotus Garden hotel in Onitsha with his girlfriend to swim inside the swimming pool.

“However, the victim who was said to be drunk jumped into the deepest part of the pool and got drowned.

“Meanwhile, the case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident. The Command enjoins the public who lack swimming skills to always take precautionary measures by using life jackets provided at the swimming pools in order to avert similar ugly incidents,” the PPRO said.
