Death on the Seashore

By Ezekiel Paul

It’s been 6 days since gunmen launched their horrific attack against Plateau citizens, killing over 148 Bokkos and Barkin Ladi citizens, including defenseless women, children and the elderly. In the aftermath of such unspeakable brutality, I and the Nigerian people have shared in the grief of families, prayed for the return of loved ones, and rightly declared solidarity with the Plateau people.

1,290 houses, 82 vehicles and 187 motorcycles were burned in the 25 communities. It is obvious that evil is present in the universe. It projects its nagging, prehensile tentacles into every level of human existence. Evil is with us as a stark, grim, and colossal reality. We have seen evil in high places where men are willing to sacrifice truth on the altars of their self-interest. The recent collateral killing by military in Tudun Biri in Kaduna State. We have seen it clothed in the garments of calamitous killing which left communities painted with blood, filled nations with widows and orphans, and sent men home physically handicapped and psychologically wrecked. We have seen evil in all of its tragic dimensions.

Let us not despair. Let us not lose faith in man and certainly not in God as we wait for justice from the President Ahmed-Bola-Tinubu lead administration. We must believe that a prejudiced mind can be changed, and that man, by the grace of God, can be lifted from the valley of hate to the high mountain of love.
