A Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Offences Court sitting in Awka has remanded a couple accused of allegedly abusing and attempting to murder an 11-year-old boy in their care.
The defendants, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, were arraigned on Thursday on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and attempted murder.
The case has attracted widespread public attention following the circulation of photographs on social media showing the minor with severe wounds and injuries across his body.
The incident also drew the attention of Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor, and other concerned individuals who called for justice for the child.
Prosecuting the case, Insp. Chinyere Okechukwu told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offences at Isiowulu Community in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
She alleged that the couple conspired and attempted to kill the 11-year-old boy who had been entrusted to their care.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 495(a) and 275(a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 36, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Anambra State, 1991, as amended.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs U.E. Onochie, ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The matter was adjourned until July 22 for hearing.
