Nigerian singer Charly Boy has opened up about his difficult relationship with his father, former Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.
Speaking on the *With Chude* podcast, Charly Boy shared how his struggles with authority started at home, especially with his father, whom he often disagreed with.
“My issues with authority began right at home,” he said. “I always wondered why my father was constantly giving us orders—when to eat, when to pray, and other rules. It got to a point where I was tired of it all.”
Charly Boy explained that the strict rules at home often led to clashes between him and his father, resulting in frequent punishments.
“I was the one who got whipped the most among my siblings because I refused to follow the rules. My father didn’t realize that he was the one who taught me to question everything. He always encouraged us to investigate things, but when I questioned him, it led to constant arguments.”
He admitted that this strained relationship lasted for many years, with both of them failing to understand each other.
“I didn’t get his methods, and he saw me as a rebellious kid who needed to be disciplined. I don’t think we liked each other much when I was younger. But as we both matured, we started to see each other’s good qualities.”
Reflecting on their differences, he added, “We never agreed on anything, and that made it hard for us to bond. He didn’t really know who I was, and I didn’t fully understand who he was either.”
Charly Boy has been vocal about his challenging relationship with his father. In another interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast in February 2024, he revealed how his father’s strong religious background had influenced his early life.
At one point, Charly Boy was even on the path to becoming a reverend father, a decision he eventually realized wasn’t for him. Feeling misunderstood by his parents, he eventually distanced himself from them.
