Chairman Has No X Account— INEC Denies Viral Allegation, Calls It Orchestrated Smear Campaign

The Office of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed a viral social media allegation claiming that the Commission’s Chairman, Joash Amupitan, previously endorsed a partisan post on X (formerly Twitter), describing the claim as false, malicious, and deliberately fabricated.

In a statement, the Commission said the allegation is entirely baseless, stressing that the INEC Chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political affiliation in any capacity.

INEC said the circulating post is part of a coordinated attempt to undermine the credibility and neutrality of its leadership at a sensitive period of electoral preparations and reforms, warning that the misinformation is intended to distract the Commission and erode public trust.

The electoral body further raised alarm over what it described as a growing wave of cyber fraud, noting that criminal actors have repeatedly created fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. It added that several such accounts have previously been reported to security agencies.

INEC disclosed that it is working with relevant security and cyber-intelligence agencies to track those behind the latest incident, vowing that perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted under the Cybercrimes Act.

The Commission urged the public to disregard the false claims and rely only on verified official communication channels for accurate information.

Reaffirming its mandate, INEC said it remains focused and undeterred in its commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.
