After a goalless 90 minutes, the final appeared destined for penalties before Torres latched onto his chance deep into extra time to deliver the decisive breakthrough.
Spain controlled much of the contest, carving out several clear-cut opportunities but were repeatedly frustrated by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, whose string of spectacular saves kept the holders in the match for over 100 minutes.
