Nigeria’s House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership of political parties, prescribing a fine of N10 million, two years’ imprisonment, or both for offenders.
The amendment was passed during Wednesday’s plenary session, as lawmakers said the move aims to curb political opportunism and enforce stricter compliance with party-affiliation rules.
The development follows the signing of the Electoral Act 2026 by Bola Ahmed Tinubu after its passage by the National Assembly.
The electoral law has sparked nationwide debate, particularly over provisions on electronic transmission of election results and the timing of the 2027 general elections. Tensions had earlier erupted in both chambers of the National Assembly during deliberations on the bill.
Despite the controversies, the House proceeded with further amendments, including the new provision criminalising dual party membership.
