In a move to tighten Nigeria’s electoral framework, the House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership in political parties.
The amendment, passed during Wednesday’s plenary, stipulates that anyone found belonging to more than one political party simultaneously will face a N10 million fine and up to two years in prison.
Lawmakers say the measure is designed to strengthen party discipline and safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
