BREAKING: Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau Resigns from PDP

Former Kano State governor and serving senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shift in his political career.
In a resignation letter obtained by The News Chronicle dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area, Shekarau stated that his decision takes immediate effect.
The letter revealed that his exit followed “wide and extensive deliberations” within his political circle, with plans to pursue his political ambitions under a different platform.
“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he wrote, expressing appreciation to party leadership.
Copies of the letter were also sent to PDP officials at both the state level in Kano State and the local government level.
Shekarau’s resignation is expected to have political implications in Kano, where he remains a prominent figure with a strong support base
