‘Black Panther’ Actress Connie Chiume Passes Away

Renowned South African actress Connie Chiume, celebrated for her roles in Marvel’s Black Panther films and Beyoncé’s musical film Black Is King, has passed away at the age of 72.

Chiume died on August 6,  at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, as confirmed by her family on Instagram.

The South African government expressed their condolences on social media platform X, speaking of her contributions to the arts: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.”

Born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, Chiume was one of nine children. Initially trained as a nurse, she ventured into the performing arts in 1977, joining the musical Sola Sola in Greece.

She gained popularity in South Africa for her roles in Inkom’ Edla Yodwa and the soap opera Rhythm City. Internationally, she was known for her portrayal of a Mining Tribe Elder in Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Chiume also played Simba’s mother, Sarabi, in Black Is King.

In 2022, Chiume was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the South African Film and TV Awards for her extensive contributions to the industry, including roles in Zone 14, Soul City, and Gomora.

She is survived by her four children
