Residents in some parts of Kano State are living in fear following repeated bandit attacks that have killed at least three people and led to many kidnappings in the past week.
The attacks were reported in Shanono, Bagwai, and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas, despite the presence of armed security forces in the region.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Mustapha Abubakar, the District Head of Faruruwa in Shanono, said the situation has worsened in recent days.
“Over the last three days, several people have been killed and many young boys and girls have been kidnapped,” he said. He explained that the bandits often come from neighbouring Katsina State, entering through bush paths and avoiding security checkpoints.
He called on the military to block these bush routes and stop the bandits from escaping after attacks.
Alhaji Yahya Bagobiri, chairman of the Faruruwa Local Security Committee, also expressed concern. He revealed that residents have been leaving their homes out of fear.
“In less than a week, many people have been kidnapped. Just yesterday, a man was killed in his house and his children were taken away,” he said.
Bagobiri urged President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take urgent action to stop the situation from getting worse. He warned that the bandits seem to be working to take control of Shanono, Tsanyawa, Bagwai, Gwarzo, and Bichi, with the aim of surrounding Kano.
The Kano State Police Command has not given an official response yet. However, a police source who asked not to be named said there had been no formal reports from the affected communities so far.
