Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has donated 20 million naira to the families of 37 Nigerian miners who died while in custody in Niger Republic
Abubakar, during his presentation of the donation to the families, expressed his concern over the circumstances of deaths of the miners and urged that more attention be given to the plight of Nigerians in the mining industry.
The News Chronicle reports that the miners were among Nigerians in Niger Republic when they were arrested and detained by authorities in the neighbouring country.

The donation is expected to ease the burden of the affected families who have to bear the economic consequences of the loss of their breadwinners.
This development has raised questions about the treatment of Nigerian nationals in foreign countries especially those working in informal and high risk sectors.
Atiku has in recent years remained active on issues concerning Nigerians at home and abroad, often calling for stronger protection of citizens and improved government intervention when they face difficulties outside the country.
