Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said Nigerians buying petrol at about N1,400 per litre are paying far less than motorists in the United Kingdom, where the equivalent price is more than N3,000 per litre.
Okpebholo made the comparison on Thursday, September 24, 2026, while speaking at the Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road event in Edo State.
The governor said he visited London the previous week and personally bought petrol, using the experience to compare fuel prices in the UK with those in Nigeria.
“Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about N3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” he said.
According to Okpebholo, the price comparison showed that Nigerians were still paying less for petrol despite ongoing concerns over the rising cost of living.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” the governor said.
His remarks come amid continued public concern over petrol prices and the rising cost of essential commodities following the removal of the petrol subsidy and subsequent increases in pump prices.
Defending the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, Okpebholo acknowledged that the measures were difficult but said they would eventually yield positive results.
“I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level. Nigeria will be on a cruising level,” he said.
