ASUU President Directs Union Members to Join NLC-TUC Strike

The Academic Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has directed its members to down tools and embark on an indefinite strike called for by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

This directive is contained in a statement issued on Monday night by Professor Emmanuel Sodeke, the president of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities.

Sodeke has urged zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons to immediately mobilize members for the strike action, emphasizing the need for the union to unite with the NLC and the TUC for a common front.

It is worth recalling that the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress has directed members nationwide to shut down services, effective from November 12th, 2023. Among other concerns, this action follows the arrest and assault of the Chairman of the Imo state branch of the Union, Joe Ajearo, who recently mobilized members of the state branch for a protest in Imo state.
