Anambra To Shutdown Wednesday As Workers Protest Against Proposed Decentralization Of National Minimum Wage

Awka – Workers in Anambra State will Wednesday join their counterparts in a nationwide protest, against the move to transfer the National Minimum Wage from the Exclusive list to the Concurrent list.

The implication of the Bill which is at the floor of the National Assembly, is that states will be determining what to pay their workers instead of a unified National wage.

Letters from the National Secretariat of the labour unions- the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had directed workers to mobilize against what they called an obnoxious policy by government.

In a circular made available to TNC correspondent in Anambra, the State NLC Chairman, Comrade Jerry Nnubia, said labour rejects the Anti-Workers’ Bill, and said the state will mobilize massively to protest against it.

“This will be the mother of all protests. The National Assembly should deregulate their pockets and not our salaries. Removal of National Minimum wage from the Exclusive list is an attack on Nigerian workers. All right-thinking lawmakers should stand up against it,” he said.

On the modalities for the protest, Comrade Nnubia said, “The Anambra protest will commence 8am this morning, at Aroma junction, Awka and move round key government offices in the state. All Workers of Anambra State will join to drive home our point to ensure that this obnoxious bill is resisted.”
