AI Is Expanding Human Capacity, Not Replacing It— Baze University VC

The Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi has stated that despite the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence in the education sector, higher education in Nigeria will not lose its steam but will instead undergo a major redefining.

Speaking during an interview on The News Chronicle’s Conversations with Prof. Jideofor Adibe Professor Adeniyi noted that every major scientific breakthrough in history was initially greeted with fear, suspicion, and uncertainty before eventually becoming integrated into everyday life.

According to the University Don, AI is following a similar trajectory;

“If you look through history, virtually all scientific discoveries came with a lot of circumspection and suspicion at the early stages. But over time, when they become integrated into our lives and systems, we begin to realise that these inventions actually help us to ease existence, improve interactions and boost productivity beyond what was previously possible,” he said.

Professor Adeniyi explained that even before the emergence of AI, the internet had already liberalised access to knowledge by revolutionalising the way information is shared globally.

Professor Adeniyi, however, noted that AI has taken that transformation a step further by making knowledge acquisition more sophisticated.

Professor Adeniyi stressed that Nigeria’s tertiary education system must now clearly distinguish between structured, systematic learning and the uncoordinated system that technology can sometimes encourage.

He warned that while AI presents enormous opportunities, there is also a growing need to promote responsible usage and guard against abuse and misinformation within the learning environment.
