In a concerted effort to optimize Nigeria’s Hajj operations and secure better terms for local airline operators, high-level discussions were convened yesterday following a direct directive from Vice President H.E. Kashim Shettima (GCON).
The meeting, held in the office of the Minister, brought together key stakeholders in the aviation and pilgrimage sectors. Attendees included the Permanent Secretary, Mahmud Adamu Kambari; the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) Chairman, Amb. Ismail Abba Yusuf; Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku; and various Hajj airline operators.
The core focus of the deliberations centered on formulating a robust Hajj aviation strategy. Specifically, the leadership explored mechanisms to negotiate a higher pilgrim quota to be airlifted exclusively by Nigerian flag carriers.
Officials emphasized that the strategy also prioritizes ensuring that Nigerian pilgrims receive the utmost fairness and respect throughout the operations.
As a concrete next step, a joint technical team has been established and tasked with reviewing the 1978 Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) and the 2015 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
This review will provide the necessary diplomatic and legal framework for Nigeria to engage Saudi authorities effectively.
