American gospel singer Kirk Franklin shared the stage with Nigerian gospel singer Mercy Chinwo on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the Crystal Palace Bowl in London.
The moment happened during the Gospel Garden Festival, described as London’s first major outdoor gospel music festival.
Franklin called Chinwo up during his set, and the two led the crowd in worship. Clips from the performance spread quickly across TikTok, Instagram and X, drawing over 134,000 views on one widely shared post within hours.
The festival was presented by Live Nation Urban and Premier Gospel. Chinwo performed as a headliner alongside other gospel acts, including Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Fred Hammond and Jerub.
Chinwo posted clips from the performance on her Facebook page afterward. She wrote that she was grateful for the day and closed her post with, “To God alone be all the glory.”
Fans online praised the pairing. One commenter wrote, “Nigeria keeps exporting amazing gospel talents to the whole world,” while another said the performance was “a collab we didn’t even know we needed.” Some Nigerian pidgin commentary described Chinwo’s energy on stage as matching Franklin’s own.

Mercy Chinwo rose to fame in 2012 after winning the second season of Nigerian Idol. She released her breakout single, “Testimony,” in 2015, followed by “Igwe” the next year. Her 2018 hit “Excess Love” became one of the most recognized gospel songs in Africa and has drawn more than 125 million views on YouTube. Other well-known songs include “Chinedum,” “Obinasom” and “Na You Dey Reign.”
Her awards include Best Gospel Artiste at the CLIMAX Awards in 2018, three wins at the Africa Gospel Awards Festival in 2019, Gospel Artiste of the Year at the AFRIMMA Awards in 2020, and Best Inspirational Single for “You Do This One” at The Headies in 2025.
Kirk Franklin began his career with the group Kirk Franklin & The Family, whose 1993 debut album became the first gospel record to sell more than a million copies. He is known for hits including “Stomp,” “Revolution,” “Brighter Day,” “Melodies from Heaven,” “I Smile” and “All Things,” which topped Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart in 2024.
Kirk Franklin is a 20-time Grammy Award winner, making him the most decorated artist in gospel music history. His wins include Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album in 1997 for “Whatcha Lookin’ 4,” Best Gospel Song at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009 for “Help Me Believe,” and Best Gospel Performance/Song in 2024 for “All Things.” In 2025, he received the Black Music Icon Award at the Recording Academy Honors and the Ultimate Icon Award at the BET Awards.
