Chelsea have officially appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four year contract, with the former midfield star expected to begin work in July following his exit from Real Madrid earlier this year.
The appointment comes at a critical time for Chelsea following their recent FA Cup final loss to Manchester City, as the team strives to rebuild and compete fiercely once more in English and European football.
The News Chronicle reports that Alonso comes to Stamford Bridge with more and more admiration for his accomplishments as a player and as a coach. While at Bayer Leverkusen, he led the team to its first-ever Bundesliga championship in 2024 and also won the German Cup, making him one of Europe’s most promising young managers.
As a player, Alonso had a successful time with Liverpool, winning the Champions League in 2005. Then he moved to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, where he won more league titles and other big trophies. He played 114 times for Spain national football team, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and two European Championships.
Chelsea fans will now hope that Alonso can turn his winning experience into a new age of prosperity in West London.
