The remains of 26-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Chidiebere Orji, have been laid to rest in his hometown in Enugu State following his tragic death in a bomb blast in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Orji, who was serving in Maiduguri as part of his mandatory national service, reportedly lost his life after an improvised explosive device detonated in the area where he was stationed. The incident, which has sparked grief among family, friends, and colleagues, highlighted ongoing security concerns in parts of the North-East.
During the burial ceremony held in his community, mourners gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects to the young graduate described as hardworking, humble, and full of promise. Emotional scenes were recorded as relatives and friends struggled to hold back tears while recounting his aspirations and plans after completing his service year.
Family members expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying Orji had looked forward to finishing his NYSC programme and supporting his parents. They called on authorities to intensify efforts to improve security and protect corps members posted to volatile areas.
Community leaders also urged the government to review deployment policies to ensure the safety of young graduates serving the nation, noting that the tragedy has left many families worried about the welfare of their children.
The NYSC scheme, which requires graduates to serve in different parts of the country, has occasionally faced criticism over the posting of corps members to regions affected by insecurity.
Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in on social media, with many Nigerians mourning Orji and praying for the repose of his soul.
