We Might Withdraw from 2026 World Cup – Iranian FA

Iran may not take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, following rising tensions between Iran and the United States.
Over the weekend, conflict escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump approved airstrikes on Iran. Reports claim the strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on U.S. military bases across the Middle East, including locations in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Israel.
Amid the political and military crisis, attention has also turned to the impact on international sports particularly the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. Iran are scheduled to play all three of their group-stage matches in the United States.
Iranian nationals are currently restricted from travelling to the U.S. under existing immigration bans introduced during Trump’s presidency.
With tensions worsening, there are growing discussions about whether Iran will withdraw from the tournament or be unable to participate.
Mehdi Taj told Spanish outlet Marca that, given the recent developments, it is “unlikely” Iran will be able to look forward to the World Cup. However, he added that the final decision would rest with football authorities.
Iran have been drawn in a group with Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt, with their first match set for June 16. There is also a possible scenario where Iran and the United States could face each other in the knockout stage if both teams finish second in their groups.
Responding to the situation, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom said the organization is closely monitoring events but described it as too early to comment in detail. He emphasized that FIFA’s priority is to ensure a safe tournament with all qualified teams participating.
According to FIFA regulations, if a qualified team withdraws, it would typically be replaced by another team from the same confederation often the next best team from the qualifying competition. In Asia’s case, this could mean Iraq replacing Iran directly, while the United Arab Emirates might move into the intercontinental playoff spot.
For now, the situation remains uncertain as political developments continue to unfold.
