ISWAP Terrorists Kill Three ICRC Personnel, Soldier in Niger Republic

Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) fighters have killed three humanitarian workers and one soldier in the Niger Republic.
The four victims were killed on Thursday in Chettimari, located in the Diffa Province of Niger Republic.
This information comes from Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region.
Makama reported that the three humanitarian workers were employed by the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) in Niger Republic at the time of their deaths.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Makama stated, “The terrorists ambushed a vehicle carrying the ICRC personnel in Chettimari in Diffa Province of the Republic of Niger on May 28, 2024.”
According to sources, the terrorists also killed one Nigerien soldier and stole the vehicle belonging to the ICRC officials.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, ISWAP fighters killed two soldiers and a civilian in the troubled Tillaberi region, according to the defence ministry.
The attack was conducted by “terrorists on some 20 motorcycles” in the village of Tabala, approximately 100 kilometres (60 miles) east of the capital, Niamey.
The clash on Wednesday also resulted in the deaths of three attackers, with authorities continuing to search for the remaining assailants.
The Tillaberi region has been troubled for years by insurgents linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group. This area is part of the “three borders” region between Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
Niger is currently under military rule following a coup in July, which the new leaders justified by citing the deteriorating security situation.
