Nigeria begins enforcing minimum age of 12 for apprenticeship

The government says that kids who are 12 years old and older can do apprenticeship in Nigeria. They’re telling people about this rule in all parts of the country.

At a big meeting in Abuja, the Ministry of Labour and Employment warned that anyone who lets a kid under 12 be an apprentice is breaking the rules. This is against what the United Nations and International Labour Organization say is right.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, represented from the Ministry by Mohammed Tolani Suraj, spoke about the rule.

They said it’s written in the law under Labour law cap 198 section 49-53 LFN. They also said the theme of this year’s meeting is good because it’s about making more jobs by teaching people skills.

They had meetings like this in different parts of Nigeria, like Umiahia, Abia State in the South-East, Ondo state in the South West, River state in the South South, Makurdi, Benue state in the North Central, Gombe state in the North East, and Katsina state in the North West.

The Ministry is also thinking of other ways to make more jobs, like giving certificates to people who are good at their job tests.

To join the training, you need to get permission from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. They have to make sure you’re good enough to start training.

The Minister also said they check to make sure the training is good and safe. They test people at the end, and if they pass, they get a certificate. They make sure the place where people work is safe so nobody gets hurt.

“At our training workshop safety precautions and regulations are strictly enforced by skills Department and Certification Officers and Safety Officers of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment in order to avoid accidents and death.
