Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, one of the best-selling Japanese comics of all time, has died at 68.

Dragon Ball studio confirmed the report on his death on Friday. He had suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding near the brain and died on 1 March, with only his family and very few friends attending his funeral.

“He would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world,” his studio said.

“We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come,” it added.

Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955, Mr Toriyama’s Dragon Ball comic series debuted in 1984 in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Since then, the manga was adapted into multiple anime series, films, and video games.

The story follows the journey of Son Goku, a pure-hearted, naive, and incredibly strong boy who trains in martial arts and explores the world in search of the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls.

Dragon Ball was his most popular work.
