Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has raised doubts over the promise of electronic transmission of election results, saying it does not automatically ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Sunrise Daily monitored by The News Chronicle, Sani reacted to the recent passage of the Amended Electoral Act.
The News Chronicle recalls that the Senate on Tuesday approved electronic transmission of results, while retaining manual collation as a backup.
Commenting on the changes, Sani said:
“Electronic transfer does not mean that we’re going to have 100% free and fair elections. No electoral system can fully prevent manipulation by those who intend to rig. With manual voting and electronic results, the integrity of the election still depends on the nation’s commitment to fairness.”
He added:
“Even with laws against voter inducement, people will find ways to manipulate the process, and we lack the manpower to monitor every corner of the country.”
Sani’s warning underscores ongoing concerns that technology alone cannot solve Nigeria’s electoral challenges without strong enforcement and political will.
