The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) Edo Command claims that in
2023, it succeeded in convicting 67 drug traders operating within the state.

The offenders were among the suspects detained between January and December of the
year under review, according to press reports from Mr. Buba Wakawa, the state’s Sector
Commander of the agency, who spoke to reporters on Sunday in Benin.

He claims that of the 173 individuals who were detained and charged with crimes during the
year, 67 of them received jail sentences from state courts after being found guilty of their
offenses.

Wakawa did point out that 106 cases involving the drug suspects were still pending in the
courts at various phases.

The sector commander also revealed that 414 drug-dependent individuals were arrested by
the state’s drug reduction unit during the year.
He claimed that after being arrested, these drug addicts received counselling and were
reunited with their families.

The head of the NDLEA urged communities all around the state to stop granting land to
individuals for the cultivation of narcotics, even as he pleaded with the populace to provide
the agency with helpful information to help it succeed in the war against illegal drugs.
