Zulum Suspends Mallam-Fatori Traditional Leaders Over Absence

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has ordered the immediate suspension of all village and ward heads in Mallam-Fatori, the headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area, following their absence during his visit to the community.

Zulum issued the directive while inspecting public infrastructure being provided for residents returning to the insurgency-ravaged border town.

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dauda Iliya, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Maiduguri.

The governor expressed disappointment over the absence of the traditional leaders, describing their failure to attend his visit as unacceptable at a critical time when residents were returning to rebuild their homes and communities.

He directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Alhaji Sugun Mele, to work with the Shehu of Borno to appoint new village and ward heads without delay.

Zulum said the government would select individuals with proven integrity, competence and commitment to work with residents, government authorities and security agencies to restore stability and accelerate development.

“Traditional leaders have a critical role to play in stabilizing communities emerging from conflict.

“Their presence is essential for maintaining communication between government and residents, strengthening community resilience and providing leadership as returnees settle into their ancestral homes,” he said.

The governor also pledged to speed up the reconstruction of critical infrastructure in Mallam-Fatori.

He directed the immediate construction of an Islamic education center, primary and secondary schools, and a hospital to support the returning population.

Zulum said that providing basic amenities would help returnees rebuild their lives, restore their livelihoods, and achieve sustainable resettlement.

The governor later visited the headquarters of the 68 Battalion, Nigerian Army, where he commended troops for their courage and commitment to securing the area.

He assured the military of continued government support to strengthen their operational capacity and effectiveness.
