The Delta State Government has directed the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education to immediately identify and profile schools across the state that require rehabilitation or complete reconstruction.
The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Asaba.
Aniagwu said the directive was among the decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, at the Government House, Asaba.
He said the government planned to commence large-scale rehabilitation and reconstruction of primary and secondary school facilities in September.
According to him, the two ministries must assess schools across the state’s 25 local government areas and determine those requiring urgent intervention.
Aniagwu said the exercise would help the government provide safer and more conducive learning environments for pupils, students and teachers.
“The governor has directed that the two ministries should immediately come up with the scope of these different schools that need to be rehabilitated or reconstructed so that government can immediately proceed to put them in order,” he said.
He added that the intervention reflected the administration’s broader commitment to upgrading public infrastructure and delivering projects with visible impact across the state.
Govt Approves More Workers’ Housing
Aniagwu said the council also approved the construction of 12 additional duplexes for Permanent Secretaries as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
He recalled that the administration had recently commissioned new residential quarters for Permanent Secretaries and provided them with official vehicles.
The commissioner further disclosed that the state government was preparing a proposal, to be backed by legislation, for the payment of a 13th-month salary to civil servants in recognition of their contributions to the state’s development.
The council also approved additional residential quarters for members of the Delta State House of Assembly following the increase in the number of constituencies from 29 to 38.
Aniagwu said the additional housing would accommodate the nine new lawmakers expected to join the assembly.
He added that Governor Oborevwori had directed the Ministry of Housing to begin the process of providing accommodation for the incoming legislators ahead of their assumption of office after the election.
92 Housing Units Approved for Medical Workers
The council also approved the construction of 92 residential units for medical personnel at Osubi Specialist Hospital.
Aniagwu said the project would comprise 24 units for resident doctors and 68 units for house officers.
He said the housing project formed part of the administration’s efforts to improve healthcare workers’ welfare and create better working conditions at the facility.
Delta Approves N7bn Ezhionum–Ogume Road
On road infrastructure, Aniagwu said the council approved the reconstruction of the 9.35-kilometer Ezhionum–Ogume Road at an estimated cost of more than N7 billion.
He said the completed road would connect rural communities, improve transportation and stimulate economic activities in the area.
Other approved road projects, he said, included the reconstruction of the Uba Egbelemeji–Ugbenikoko Road in Warri North; the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Mosogar Community Road Junction–Okwueka Road; and the reconstruction of the Old Oviorie–Agbarho–Eku Road.
Delta Terminates Underperforming Contracts
Aniagwu also disclosed that the government terminated some contracts after contractors failed to meet expected performance standards.
He said the State Tenders Board recommended the termination of the affected contracts following poor project delivery.
The terminated projects include the Okerenkoko Township Road; the construction of Adjei Street and School Road with interlocking stones at a new layout in Warri South; and the permanent office complex of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC).
According to Aniagwu, the government would begin fresh procurement processes and award the projects to contractors with proven capacity to complete them.
“The termination will allow the government to commence fresh procurement processes and re-award the projects to contractors that have the capacity to deliver them,” he said.
He said the decision demonstrated the administration’s determination to deliver public projects on schedule and prevent taxpayers’ funds from remaining trapped in abandoned or poorly executed projects.
Govt Moves to Tackle Flooding, Improve Hospitals
Aniagwu said the council also approved the completion of a storm drainage project around the Specialist Hospital, Asaba, as part of measures to address flooding in the area.
He added that the government approved the reconstruction of internal roads at Warri Central Hospital to improve movement and access for patients, medical workers and visitors.
