Zulum inaugurates reconstructed market and teachers’ housing estate in Banki

The Borno State Governor, Engr Babagana Umara Zulum, recently visited Banki town to inaugurate the newly renovated Banki International Market, which had been destroyed by Boko Haram militants.

The market, located near the border with Cameroon, consists of 128 shops and around 440 market stalls.

It aims to provide a better trading environment for small and medium-sized businesses, offering modern facilities like water and sanitation.

This initiative is crucial for revitalizing economic activities and generating employment opportunities, especially for those affected by the Boko Haram conflict.

In addition to the market, Governor Zulum also unveiled a new housing estate for teachers in Banki.

The estate comprises five units of two-bedroom bungalow houses, aiming to improve teachers’ welfare and enhance productivity.

Furthermore, Governor Zulum laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new international cattle market in Banki.

This market, once the largest in Lake Chad, was abandoned due to Boko Haram activities.

The project aims to meet international standards and revitalize trans-border trade, benefiting not only Nigeria but also neighboring countries like Chad, Central African Republic, and Cameroon.

During the ceremony, Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of collaboration with Cameroon to promote trans-border trade and international student exchange.

He expressed his commitment to reopening the international cattle route for the supply of cattle from neighboring countries.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Governor of the Far North Region of Cameroon, members of the House of Representatives, House of Assembly members, and other senior government officials, highlighting the significance of the initiatives for regional development and cooperation.
