Zamfara bans traditional rulers from granting mining consent

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of insecurity in the state. 

Recently, he signed an executive order aimed at putting a halt to a concerning practice related to mining consent.

The official signing of this executive order occurred at the Council Chambers in the Government House, Gusau, on a Thursday.

The governor, through his spokesperson Sulaiman Bala Idris, highlighted that the decision was motivated by the urgent need to address a detrimental trend linked to the fight against banditry.

This executive order is specifically designed to prohibit traditional rulers within Zamfara State from issuing consent letters for mining activities across the 14 local government areas.

The spokesperson, Idris, emphasized that the ban extends to all forms of consent letters, regardless of whether they are granted to individuals, companies, or organizations involved in mining operations.

Governor Lawal, while signing the order, underscored the severity of the dangers posed by the rampant issuance of these consent letters.

He expressed concern about the role that mining activities have played in exacerbating the security situation in the state, particularly the menace of banditry.

In his remarks, Governor Lawal emphasized the responsibility of the government to take decisive action in resolving the challenges posed by illegal mining operations.

He highlighted the reckless abuse of consent letters and stressed the necessity of rectifying the problems associated with their issuance.

The governor acknowledged the significant contribution of mining activities to the security crisis in Zamfara and asserted that the executive order was a crucial step towards addressing this issue.

He reassured the public that the government is actively taking all necessary measures to tackle the problems surrounding the issuance of consent letters.

Governor Lawal called upon the guidance of Almighty Allah in the government’s efforts to serve and safeguard the lives and properties of the people.

Zamfara State, situated in the North-West zone, has been grappling with severe challenges, including kidnappings, killings, and other unwholesome activities perpetrated by bandits and terrorists.

The executive order is seen as a proactive measure to curb these issues and enhance security in the region.
