YouTube, the globally renowned video-sharing platform, has implemented a significant change affecting users who are not logged into their Google accounts.
Instead of displaying video recommendations on the home page, users are now greeted with a blank page prompting them to start watching videos to generate personalized recommendations.
Previously, YouTube’s home page would populate with video suggestions tailored to the user’s local history.
However, users who are logged out, using a browser where they haven’t logged into YouTube, or in Incognito mode, will now encounter a message urging them to begin watching videos to build a feed of personalized content.
This alteration was initially identified by Bleeping Computer, although the exact timing of its implementation remains unclear.
According to reports, users who were logged in and had cleared their search and watch history also encountered the same message, indicating a broader application of the change.
Expressing similar observations, testing confirmed that YouTube’s home page is now devoid of video recommendations in Incognito mode or when accessed without logging in.
This adjustment is not unprecedented, as YouTube previously halted recommendations for users not signed in or those who disabled their watch history in August of the previous year.
However, following user criticism, the company swiftly reversed its decision.
While this change may be disconcerting for users concerned about privacy or accustomed to curated recommendations, it presents an opportunity for individuals seeking a fresh start in building their video preferences locally.
