Elon Musk, the owner of the platform now known as X, has lifted a ban on political advertisements that had been put in place at Twitter to combat misinformation. This move marks a significant shift in policy, allowing potentially misleading political messages to be posted on the platform. The decision comes shortly after former President Donald Trump made his first post on the platform since January 2021, sharing his police mugshot following his arrest in Georgia.

The return of political ads on X raises concerns about the spread of misinformation, particularly in the wake of the insurrection at the US Capitol. Trump’s post, which included his mugshot and a caption reading “Election interference,” signals his re-entry into a platform that had previously been a favored outlet for his communications during his time in office.

Twitter had permanently suspended Trump after the January 6 riot, citing violations of their policy against glorifying violence and the spread of false claims about the election. Musk, who acquired the platform in the previous year, reinstated Trump’s account in November 2022, though Trump continued to engage with his followers on his own platform, Truth Social.

X announced its decision to allow political ads in a blog post, stating that the move was in line with their commitment to free expression. However, the platform emphasized that it maintains policies against the promotion of false or misleading information, particularly claims that could undermine confidence in elections.

The decision to allow political ads on X raises questions about content moderation and the platform’s ability to combat manipulation. X indicated that it will expand its safety and elections teams to address these concerns and will introduce an online center for reviewing political ads.
