World Cup: Switzerland Beat Colombia on Penalties to Reach Quarter-finals

—

Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after a tense Round of 16 encounter ended goalless following 120 minutes at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

The closely fought contest was defined by disciplined defending, tactical organisation and few clear-cut chances, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

Colombia made the brighter start, controlling possession and pressing aggressively to disrupt Switzerland’s rhythm while looking to exploit spaces on the counter-attack.

The South Americans stretched the Swiss defence with quick movement and attacking runs but were unable to break through a well-organised backline.

Switzerland gradually settled into the match after the hydration break, enjoying more possession and building attacks patiently from the back.

Despite their improved control, the Swiss also struggled to create clear scoring opportunities as Colombia remained dangerous on the break.

Switzerland strengthened their midfield at the start of the second half by introducing Djibril Sow for Ardon Jashari, while Colombia later refreshed their attack with the introductions of Juan Fernando Quintero and Johan Campaz.

Both sides continued to battle for control, but disciplined defending and solid goalkeeping kept the score level.

The physical contest produced several bookings, with Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria, Luis Suárez and Davinson Sánchez all cautioned.

Neither team could find a breakthrough during extra time as fatigue set in and players from both sides battled cramp.

The match was eventually decided from the penalty spot.

Juan Fernando Quintero converted Colombia’s opening kick before Xhaka replied for Switzerland.

Davinson Sánchez then missed Colombia’s second penalty, allowing Zeki Amdouni to put Switzerland ahead.

Although Johan Campaz scored for Colombia, Manuel Akanji failed to extend Switzerland’s advantage after missing his spot-kick.

Carlos Hernández missed Colombia’s next penalty before Cedric Itten converted for Switzerland.

Luis Díaz kept Colombia in contention with a successful penalty, but Ruben Vargas calmly converted the decisive kick to hand Switzerland a 4-3 shootout victory.

The result sends Switzerland into the World Cup quarter-finals after a composed defensive display and confident penalty execution.

Colombia impressed with their energy and pressing throughout the match but paid the price for failing to convert their chances and missing crucial penalties in the shootout.
