Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a solid 2-0 victory over Algeria in their Round of 32 clash on Friday.
Breel Embolo gave the Swiss an early lead in the 10th minute, finishing clinically from a pass by Johan Manzambi to settle his side into the contest.
Switzerland controlled possession for much of the first half with disciplined defending and structured build-up play, while Algeria struggled to create meaningful chances.
Algeria’s Farid Chaibi was booked in the 36th minute as they attempted to gain a foothold in the match.
The Swiss doubled their advantage immediately after the restart when Dan Ndoye struck in the 46th minute to put his side firmly in control.
Algeria responded with changes in the 58th minute, introducing Jaouen Hadjam and Amine Gouiri for Houssem Aouar and Ramiz Zerrouki in an attempt to increase attacking threat.
Switzerland also rotated in the 71st minute, bringing on Fabian Rieder and Noah Okafor, while Algeria introduced Anis Hadj Moussa and Hicham Boudaoui shortly after.
Boudaoui was later cautioned in the 72nd minute as Algeria pushed forward but continued to struggle against Switzerland’s compact defence.
Further substitutions followed in the closing stages as both teams reshuffled, with Switzerland introducing Zeki Amdouni, Silvan Widmer and Michel Aebischer to manage the game.
Despite Algeria’s efforts, Switzerland remained organised and composed, seeing out the match comfortably to secure a deserved win.
The result ended Algeria’s World Cup campaign at the Round of 32 stage, while Switzerland advanced to the Round of 16 with a confident and controlled performance.
