As the World Book Day is being celebrated across the globe, the Education Champions League (ECL), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), dedicated to fostering literacy development, intellectual growth and educational advancement, has stressed the need for the promotion of reading culture among secondary school students and in the society as a whole.
The call was contained in a statement issued by Wenenda Wali, on behalf of ECL, the NGO recently launched in Port Harcourt, River State, with the mission to bridge the gaps in quality interpersonal communication and nation building by encouraging reading culture and writing among the young ones and all generations.
The ECL’s statement reads: “Today, on World Book Day, the Education Champions League (ECL) reaffirms its commitment to promoting a culture of reading among secondary school students and society at large.
“Recognizing the profound impact of literature on intellectual development and academic success, ECL aims to ignite a passion for reading through its innovative quiz competition platform.
“Reading is not just a pastime; it is a fundamental skill that opens doors to knowledge, creativity, and personal growth. In an era dominated by digital distractions, nurturing a love for books is more crucial than ever. ECL believes that by engaging students in literary exploration and critical analysis, we can empower them to become lifelong learners and leaders in their communities.
“The ECL quiz competition serves as a catalyst for this mission, providing a dynamic and interactive platform for students to immerse themselves in the world of literature.
“Through engaging with diverse texts, students sharpen their analytical skills, broaden their perspectives, and deepen their understanding of complex themes and ideas.

The World Book Day first observed in 1995 is celebrated every April 23 to underscore the significance of reading books. Selected by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the symbolic date in world literature marks the anniversary of the birth or death of some renowned great authors, like William Shakespeare, Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Maurice Druon, Haldor Kiljan Laxness, Josep Pla, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and others.
