Women’s Afro Basket: D’Tigress roars to the final

Women’s Afro Basket: D’Tigress roars to the final

The Nigeria Basketball Women team know as D’Tigress yesterday roared to the final of the 2023 Women’s Afro Basketball tournament. They defeated Rwanda by 79-48 to reach their 4th consecutive finals.

Nigeria is the defending champion. They won the last three Women’s Afro Basket trophies (2017, 2019 and 2021).

The girls, who are described as the most successful African women’s team, have been dominating since 2015 and are currently on a 23 games unbeaten streak.

Furthermore, they will meet the winner between Senegal and Mali in the final slated for Saturday.

In a post match news conference monitored by The News Chronicle, Head Coach of Rwanda, Sheik Caar, admitted that Nigeria is a power house in basketball and that they made three pointers look easy and they had 45 per cent average success.

“If you have a team making three points look easy and you only have just one player making points how are you going to win a team like Nigeria.

“We tried but Nigeria are better physically and mentally, indeed they deserve to win and we just have to prepare harder next time,” Caar said.

Nigeria’s Head Coach, Rena Wakama, who had just two weeks to prepare the team expressed happiness over the victory.
