Woman Arraigned Over Alleged N5m Plantain Theft in Ogun

A 35-year-old woman, Emmanuel Grace, was on Thursday arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Ogun, for allegedly stealing plantains valued at N5 million.

Grace, whose residential address was not disclosed, faces two counts of conspiracy and stealing. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences at about 1 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Sogoyinbo Village, Owode-Egba, Abeokuta.

Olu-Balogun alleged that Grace unlawfully entered the premises of LONSTEL FARM LTD and harvested several bunches of plantains before they matured.

He valued the harvested plantains at N5 million and said security guards at the farm apprehended the defendant before handing her over to the police.

The prosecutor said the alleged offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun 2006.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Araba, granted Grace bail in the sum of N1 million, with one surety in the same amount.

Araba ruled that the surety must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.

She adjourned the case until Sept. 29 for hearing.
