Wives of 36 Nigerian military officers currently in detention in Abuja have called for an open and transparent General Court-Martial trial over allegations of a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu.
The women said a public trial will ensure due process and allow Nigerians to follow the proceedings. They stressed that transparency is key to building public trust in the military justice system.
The 36 officers were detained over alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow President Tinubu. Military authorities have not released full details of the charges, but said investigations are ongoing.
Families of the detained officers have repeatedly raised concerns about the conditions of their detention and the pace of legal proceedings. The demand for an open court-martial adds to growing calls for clarity on the case.
Military authorities have yet to comment on the request for a public trial. Under military law, a General Court-Martial can be held in camera if the court deems it necessary for security reasons, but the law also provides for open proceedings.
The case remains one of the most sensitive security matters facing the Tinubu administration since 2023.
