My biography changed how I see Nigeria:
I am Ijebu man from Southwest Nigeria — father Odusanya.
I was born in Enugu, heart of Igboland — birthplace gives me Igbo bird.
My mother is Idoma — North Central — Benue — Northern mother by blood — Idoma from the North.
Three in one body already: Ijebu Yoruba + Enugu Igbo + Idoma North-Central. That is why I cannot be tribalist. Which coop do I enter? Yoruba coop? Igbo coop? Idoma coop? I am all coops.
This Idoma Northern mother is important Sir — because many think North is only Hausa-Fulani. Idoma is North-Central — Middle Belt — factor of unity often forgotten. My Northern mother is not just North — she is Idoma North — bridge between North and South — like my life.

Maryam Ndidi Okogwu — Born 1948 — Father Leonard Nwanonye Okogwu Igbo Delta State — Mother Hajiya Asabe Halima Mohammed Niger State Nupe — Igbo-North fusion like me — Igbo father + Northern mother — Same as my own formula: Igbo birthplace + Northern mother.
She then married Major Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida — Nupe man from Niger State — Kaduna Sept 6 1969 — 21 years old — just before 21st birthday — middle of Civil War — Yet love crossed tribe.
In 1989 she said: “Tribalism means nothing to me. We are all Nigerians. My father was Igbo from Delta State, and he married my mother from Niger State. They made it work even though they came from different tribes. Nigeria needs unity!”
This is not politics — it is her life story. Like mine. Igbo father + Niger mother = Maryam. Ijebu father + Enugu birth + Idoma Northern mother = me.
Maryam is proof of Maitama Sule’s gift theory: Northern leadership from mother Asabe + Igbo trade/commerce from father Leonard + her own diplomacy Better Life Programme.
