US Warns It Will Watch Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

The administration of United States President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, according to US Congressman Riley Moore, who said Washington will pay close attention to the conduct, execution, and outcome of the polls.
Speaking in an interview with NoireTV Monitored by The News Chronicle on Sunday, Moore said the US government would be watching how the elections unfold to ensure the process is credible.
“We’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed. That’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to,” he said.
Responding to a question on whether the United States could do more to support credible elections in Nigeria, the Republican lawmaker representing West Virginia said the Trump administration remains committed to monitoring developments.
Moore also disclosed that the US House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill containing provisions related to Nigeria, including religious freedom and US security assistance.
According to him, the proposed legislation contains “pretty strong and aggressive language” that could influence future relations between the two countries.
He said the bill includes measures addressing the persecution of Christians, restrictions on US security assistance to Nigeria, and conditions the Nigerian government would be required to meet.
The congressman further revealed that he would continue discussions on Nigeria with President Donald Trump during a scheduled dinner meeting with the US leader and fellow lawmakers.
Moore is a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, alongside Congressman Chris Smith. The proposed legislation seeks regular reports to the US Congress on religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.
