University students in Kwara state clash with NDLEA and Police officers

On Thursday, there was trouble at Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete. Some students got hurt during a problem involving students, officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the police in the university area.

The NDLEA officers came to the university to arrest some students, but the students didn’t want that to happen. They blocked the road to stop the officers.

In videos on Thursday, students were running away while gunshots could be heard.

Before that, on Wednesday, EFCC officers came and arrested 48 students and two others. Then, on Thursday, NDLEA and police officers also came to arrest more students.

A student from the school said, “Yesterday, EFCC raided the school. Today NDLEA and police came and arrested boys (students) anyhow.”

One tweet said, “EFCC came to raid in the middle of the night, two days ago, and arrested over 30 students. NDLEA came in today to do the same. Students tried to stop them, but they joined forces with the police and started throwing teargas at students. They even started shooting guns, as I saw with my own eyes.”

Another tweet said, “This school is a mess, mahn!! I don’t tire!! Because, in God’s name, is the EFCC supposed to shoot at a student’s car??? Come to raid at 2 am??? Taking students that have exams in the morning???”

The students went to the school gate to protest against what happened and the arrest of their friends.

The university registrar said peace was back in the area but denied that anyone got shot or died during the unrest.

The police said the students attacked police stations, damaged things, and hurt police officers.

They said the students gathered around 4:00 on Thursday because they were unhappy about the recent raids by NDLEA.

“Additionally, one police officer, PC Fayemi Kehinde, sustained minor injuries as a result of the stones thrown at the police station. He was given first-aid treatment at the hospital and discharged.

“Meanwhile, the DPO Shao Division and three other tactical teams are presently on the ground to support the efforts in de-escalating the situation.”

“The CP urged all students of KWASU involved in this act to exercise some restraints and work towards resolving issues through peaceful dialogue.”
