Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok Resolve Dispute: Music Returns to the App

TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) have settled their disagreement, bringing UMG’s music back to the app.

The deal, announced on May 2, 2024, means TikTok will pay UMG’s artists and songwriters more, offer better marketing tools, and address concerns about AI use.

Previously, UMG removed its music from TikTok due to disputes over low royalties, AI regulation, and safety issues like bullying and mental health.

TikTok argued it wouldn’t be pressured into paying more. But now, both sides have compromised.

This agreement is a win for artists under UMG, who can now enjoy TikTok’s promotional benefits, and for fans who can engage with their favorite UMG-signed artists.

However, TikTok still faces challenges in the US. The government wants its American branch sold off or it might face sanctions.
