Unemployed Man Arraigned for Allegedly Stealing ₦1.59m Worth of Phones

A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Dutse, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered the remand of an unemployed man, Salim Nasir, in police custody over the alleged theft of six mobile phones valued at ₦1.59 million.

Nasir, a resident of Kubwa, Abuja, was arraigned on charges of criminal trespass, housebreaking and theft.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Alkali ordered that Nasir be remanded in police custody and adjourned the case until Aug. 10 for hearing.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mrs Ogehenekaro Agbodo, told the court that the alleged offences were committed on July 24.

Agbodo alleged that the defendant unlawfully entered an apartment in Kubwa at about midnight while the occupants were asleep and stole six mobile phones belonging to them.

She told the court that the stolen phones were valued at ₦1.59 million.

The prosecutor further stated that during police investigation and interrogation, Nasir failed to give a satisfactory account of how he came into possession of the phones.

According to her, the alleged offences contravene Sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code Law.
