UK, Germany Reaffirm Support for Nigeria’s Counter-Terrorism Fight

The Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany to Nigeria have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to continued collaboration with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
The assurance was given on Wednesday, February 18, during a historic visit to the Headquarters of the Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI, in Maiduguri by Brigadier Tom Harper of the United Kingdom and Colonel Boris Bovecamp of Germany.
Speaking during the visit, Brigadier Tom Harper highlighted the strong and enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, anchored on shared values of democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.
He commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sustained efforts against terrorism in the North East, particularly under Operation HADIN KAI, and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to further training support through the British Military Advisory Team.
In his remarks, Colonel Boris Bovecamp said his visit was aimed at identifying areas for future collaboration, especially in capacity building.
He noted that Germany is exploring possible interventions through regional cooperation frameworks to enhance operational effectiveness and joint efforts to defeat terrorism.
The Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, expressed appreciation for the support and contributions of both the UK and German Defence Attachés to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations.
He said ongoing training initiatives have significantly improved troops’ skills and adaptability to evolving security challenges, describing the partnerships as mutually beneficial. He also identified technical expertise, as well as equipment and logistics support, as key areas for future cooperation.
The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register, presentation of souvenirs, and a group photograph to mark the engagement.
