Rivers Assembly Suspends Fubara Impeachment After Tinubu’s Intervention

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, in a dramatic turn in the state’s deepening political crisis.

Lawmakers announced the decision during plenary at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, February 19, effectively putting the contentious process on hold.

The move comes less than a week after President Bola Tinubu stepped into the escalating standoff between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Assembly faction aligned with Wike had, in January, issued a notice of impeachment against the governor and his deputy, accusing them of gross misconduct, an action that further inflamed the power struggle gripping the oil-rich state for months.

Wednesday’s suspension signals a possible thaw in tensions, though the underlying political battle remains unresolved.
