Two young sisters have been confirmed dead while three others sustained injuries after a residential building collapsed in the Tudun Amba area of Lafia Central, Nasarawa State.
The victims, aged four and two, were reportedly trapped under the rubble following the collapse and died at the scene, The News Chronicle gathered.
Three other occupants of the building were rescued from the debris and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
A resident who confirmed the incident on Saturday identified the father of the two deceased children as Musa.
The cause of the collapse was yet to be officially established as of the time of filing this report, with relevant authorities expected to launch an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, residents of Tudun Amba have called on the Nasarawa State Government and relevant agencies to strengthen enforcement of building regulations and conduct integrity tests on ageing structures across the community.
They said such measures would help identify potentially dangerous buildings and prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
The incident has plunged the Tudun Amba community into mourning as residents grieve the loss of the two young sisters.
