The social network formerly known as Twitter has officially migrated to X.com, as confirmed by owner Elon Musk.
This move finalizes the rebranding effort that Musk initiated after acquiring Twitter for $44 billion in late 2022.
The rebrand to “X” was announced in July 2023, though until now, the domain name remained Twitter.com.
“All core systems are now on X.com,” Musk wrote on X, sharing an image of the new logo: a white X on a blue circle.
While queries to Twitter.com now redirect to X.com, the original domain still appears in some browsers.
Musk’s use of the letter X is not new.
It began in 1999 with his attempt to create an online financial superstore called X.com.
His acquisition of Twitter was executed through a company named X Corp.
Musk has ambitious plans for X, envisioning it as a super-app akin to China’s WeChat, which integrates messaging, voice and video calling, social media, mobile payments, games, news, online booking, and other services.
Recently, an AI chatbot named “Grok” was added to X and has been launched in Europe.
Musk’s tenure at X has been marked by controversy, including mass layoffs, significant technical problems, and the reinstatement of accounts belonging to right-wing conspiracy theorists and former US President Donald Trump.
Additionally, X is under scrutiny from European regulators concerned about misinformation and the reduction of content moderation staff.
The EU has demanded an explanation from X regarding these staffing cuts, setting a deadline of Friday for the company’s response.
