President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order repealing the AI-related order previously issued by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
The order, signed in 2023, was designed to manage the risks associated with artificial intelligence in areas such as consumer protection, worker safety, and national security.
Biden’s executive order had instructed the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop guidelines for companies to identify and address flaws in AI models, including addressing biases.
It also required AI developers to submit safety test results to the U.S. government before releasing new AI systems to the public.
Trump’s decision to revoke the order has drawn criticism from those who argue that the reporting requirements were burdensome and forced companies to disclose proprietary information.
Supporters of the repeal emphasized Trump’s campaign promise to promote AI development with a focus on free speech and human well-being, though he had not provided detailed plans during his campaign.
This move marks a shift in policy priorities as Trump aims to reshape the regulatory landscape for AI in the U.S.
