Compliments of the season! In today’s trending news stories;

1. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has passed away at the age of 67. He had been facing health issues, sought medical treatment abroad, and recently died in Lagos on Wednesday. His medical challenges had led to a transfer of power to his deputy and the suspension of his wife’s birthday celebrations in which  ‘unforeseen circumstances’ were cited.

2. A devastating fire occurred on Christmas Eve at the home of the late former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Obong Udo Ekpenyong, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The fire resulted in the tragic deaths of Ekpenyong’s wife and her sister. Obong Ekpenyong had passed away in February 2021. The Akwa Ibom State government and the Transition Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government expressed condolences and offered support to the family. A seven-day mourning period for Ukanafun indigenes has been declared, starting from December 26th, 2023, to January 1st, 2024, and Ukanafun’s participation in the “Christmas Unplugged” event has been canceled as a sign of respect.
3. Former Speaker Ghali Na’Abba, who served as the 8th Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, has passed away at the age of 65 in Abuja. He had been battling a long-term illness. Na’Abba, elected in 1999 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), became Speaker in 2000 after a political crisis. Known for assertive leadership, he clashed with the executive branch, advocating for legislative independence and transparency. His legacy includes advocacy for education and human development, with the establishment of the Ghali Na’Abba Foundation in 2004. Condolences have poured in from political figures, and his remains will be buried in Abuja according to Islamic rites.

4. The tragic incident in Plateau State, Nigeria, where multiple attacks was launched on communities has resulted in over 150 deaths and over 10,000 displacements. President Bola Tinubu condemned the attacks, ordered the arrest of the killers, and deployed a delegation to troubled areas. The Chairman of Community Peace Observers reported the death toll, while the state government and police provided differing figures. The Governor highlighted flaws in the state’s security architecture and expressed concern over occupied schools. Various political figures, including Peter Obi and Bukola Saraki, condemned the attacks, urging investigations and justice. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Northern Elders Forum also condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for peace and security. Northern Governors and Senators Forum expressed condolences and called for investigations, and the Northern Elders Forum raised concerns about the government’s operational methods.

5. Traders in Gwarzo town’s local government market in Kano State are facing significant losses as a fierce fire consumed numerous shops and property worth millions of naira. The fire, which started around midnight, continued until Monday morning before firefighters could contain it. Many affected traders are expressing despair and seeking assistance from the government and well-off individuals. Honorable Abdulahi Muazu Babangandu, the representative of Gwarzo Federal Constituency, offered sympathies and immediate relief by donating N500,000 to help the distressed traders.

6. Veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba in a podcast stated that popular skit maker Mark Angel, is one of the richest comedians in Nigeria, earning up to $300,000 monthly from platforms like YouTube and Facebook. Alibaba noted that Angel’s wealth might be underestimated because he doesn’t flaunt it. He urged people not to look down on the comedy profession.

7. Portable, Nigerian street-pop artist, has been declared winner of a celebrity boxing fight against Nollywood actor Charles Okocha after four rounds. The fight which took place at Landmark Beach in Lagos, was wassanctioned by Heritage Boxing Entertainment, and was related to alleged contractual issues involving a claimed N40m rip-off. Portable won the fight, although both declined to continue in Round Five, securing the victory without a TKO or KO.
